CÁMARA HIPERBÁRICA CÁRDENAS
Diving Zone Description
Located in the narrow and long Hicacos Peninsula, on the Atlantic Ocean, and 140 km. (87.5 miles) from Havana, Varadero has become Cuba’s major tourist resort, expanding along 20 km. (12.5 miles) of beautiful sandy beaches and surrounded by warm and crystal-clear waters that are the favorite attraction for foreign visitors.

This jewel Nature created for the pleasure of humankind is also gifted with facilities for the practice of recreational diving, since there are sites with excellent conditions for those who wish to experience that exciting activity.

After pool training is over (near the hotels or the diving centers), the stair-like structure of the platform allows the diver to go deeper into the sea. In sites such as Las Mandarinas, only 10 meters (33 feet) deep, you can see a patch of coral with many sessile species, including well-developed gorgonians and different types of corals, where you can also find a wide variety of coral fish, cubera snappers, groupers and large schools of grunts which are fed by divers.

Another diving site is a coastal coral reef known as Playa Coral, which runs from 1 to 20 meters (3 to 66 feet) of depth. It can be reached by swimming from the beach under its protection, where more than 30 species of coral live. Some of which have a remarkable development getting out of the water and forming channels, passages or caves that shelter a very particular and interesting fauna.

For advanced divers, there are some keys and islet with a beautiful seabed to the east of the Peninsula, where the Jardines del Rey Archipelago begins. We suggest the Caribe Wreck, an old German merchant ship that sunk in 1943 during the Second World War, which is 10 meters (33 feet) deep and scattered in a wide area. Angelfish, barracudas, groupers, lobsters and two-meter-long (65 feet) green morays that can be fed by divers are abundant. At Bonaci, you can also see a beautiful coral reef that is 30 meters (98 feet) deep, with many corals, gorgonians and colorful sponges.

Varadero diving centers offer cave diving lover unforgettable dives at two sites: La Cueva de Saturno, a cave flooded by salty water, with a free surface lake and two galleries that are 20 meters (66 feet) deep, with extraordinarily transparent waters, as if you were diving in the air. This site also has many secondary formations, peculiar stalactites and stalagmites and you can see blind fish and shrimps. El Cenote, in Bay of Pigs, is also a limestone formation flooded by sea water through an underwater connection, with a big lake at the entrance and deep side cracks (investigations have gone up to 70 meters/230 feet deep) inhabited by species of coral fish.

Another major attraction for advanced divers is the "blue hole", known as Ojo del Mégano. Although it is a little far from the diving sites of the area (96km/60 miles east of the Peninsula), this underwater wonder is worth visiting. At only 10 meters (33 feet) deep, you can see a hole in the platform that is 45 meters (148 feet) in diameter, 70 meters (230 feet). It is inhabited by different species of coral fish, groupers, snappers, lobsters and many others.

Varadero’s diving centers also offer excursions to diving sites in the Bay of Pigs, mainly to Punta Perdiz, El Brinco, Los Cocos and El Cenote.

There are four Diving centers in Varadero and Cardenas, 12 km. (7.5 miles) away. There is a Hyperbaric Chamber with all necessary equipment to treat any kind of diving accident.
